This is one of the oldest and most important Zen Buddhist Temples.
It was constructed by the Priest Tokei in the Muromachi Period.
The main garden was designed by Soami who was a very popular gardener
of the period. The garden represents us the universe, consisting
of the green moss which expresses a wide sea and some rock islets
that express mountains.
In 1509, this was founded by Rokkaku-Ominokami-Masayori and Kogaku-Soko,
his son became the first chief priest of this temple. The garden,
designated as the Special Scenic Beauty, is one of the representative
Karesansui (Dry garden), laid out in the Muromachi Period. It
consists of rocks in various shapes and sizes which represent
mountains, a water fall and a stream in a small space. Quoted
from a sign.
