The Aoi Matsuri, one of the oldest festivals in the world, is named after the dark and shiny spiked leaves of the aoi (hollyhock) used to decorate the costumes of the participants. Aoi leaves are believed to have all sorts of powers, including protection against lightning and earthquakes, and guaranteeing easy childbirth.
